Well it’s February, and for the CrossFit community that means one thing… the Open is coming! The Open begins February 23rd and goes through March 27th, 2017. It’s a great way of testing your fitness year over year. It also is a great way to bring the community together as athletes compete and cheer for each other in CrossFit boxes all over the world.
It doesn’t matter if you just started CrossFit or if you have been doing it for years, everyone should sign up and compete. I used to just think if I couldn’t do RX, then it wasn’t worth doing it. But that’s not true. With a wide range of options for age brackets and scaling, there is something for all levels. It’s an effective way of pushing yourself and getting outside of your comfort zone.
It’s important to have a good, experienced coach guiding you through the workouts and helping you scale and strategize. Also having other athletes at the gym doing it with you and cheering you on is essential. This is what CrossFit is all about. Fitness, yes, but what makes CrossFit different is the supportive community, and there is no better way to experience that than participating in the Open.
Now, I’ll be honest: my favorite part of the Open is Thursday night, watching Dave Castro announce what the WOD will be and then watching the Games athletes compete. It’s always more fun than actually doing the WOD. But, doing the workout is part of it, and it feels really good afterwards to have accomplished something so challenging.
So go sign up now, get excited, and most importantly – have fun!
